When Once We Were Free
When once we were free,
We lived happily
In a land of our very own!
Our gov'ment we chose
So it shan't impose
O'er us like some king on his throne!
If ever it veered,
Toward tyranny steered,
To it we'd not beg nor plead!
Consent we'd withdraw,
From us came the law,
Together, we'd simply secede!
But the tyrant hissed,
"You'd best not resist!
My rule you shall never escape!"
"This Union I'll save,"
The tyrant did rave,
But 'twas not marriage -- it was RAPE!
To arms we did go
To battle our foe
And throw off the usurper's reign!
But, though he was wrong,
His arms proved too strong,
Now we're raped again and again!
In captivity,
Our hearts are yet free
To remember the life we'd known
When once we were free
And lived happily
In a land of our very own!
